Travel Trainer

The Kennedy CollectiveSM is seeking an outgoing, community oriented candidate who enjoys travel across the state of Connecticut who can teach people with disabilities and seniors to safely access public transportation.


Job purpose:


Provide direct travel training and community and safety education programs for persons with disabilities and seniors and develop curriculums for persons with disabilities to safely access public transportation. 


Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Develop and implement individualized transportation plans and mobility instruction curriculum for individuals learning to use public transit.

  • Conduct route surveys, interpret maps, timetables, and other transit materials for route planning

  • Complete intake and assessment of individuals to determine eligibility for travel training.

  • Document individual and peer trainer feedback for purpose of educational curriculum development and training.

  • Implement community safety, utilization, and emergency/crisis programs.

  • Act as liaison and maintain open communication between the agency and various stakeholders including family/friends of individuals served, other service providers, and transit personnel.

  • Conduct outreach efforts to generate and maintain a referral pool.

  • Complete special projects within the field of mobility services as assigned including overnight travel training workshops in Massachusetts.

  • Teach in-service trainings to rehabilitation/education professionals about mobility training and transit service.

  • Provide follow‑up and retraining services to individuals.

  • Support individuals in communicating needs to transit providers.

  • Maintain attendance and program records, individual progress notes, and reports.

  • Identify transit issues affecting people with disabilities and address issues as appropriate.

  • Assist in the writing and the completion of quarterly/yearly reports.

  • Participate in in-service training programs.

  • Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned. 



Requirements

Qualifications:



  • High School Diploma.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services or related field preferred. 

  • One year of experience working with persons with disabilities.

  • Experience using public transit is highly desired.

  • Valid Driver’s License and must maintain a satisfactory driving record.

  • You are required to be in possession of a car on-site during your entire shift to transport yourself and/or individuals served to community locations in all weather conditions and throughout all neighborhoods.

  • Must be able to work in a variety of settings, weather conditions, and locations.

  • Must be willing to work in all regions of CT and throughout the state.

  • Knowledge and skills in Microsoft Office and the internet.

  • Work a flexible schedule that may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.

  • Communicate clearly in oral and written form on a constant basis. 

  • Work independently, utilize good judgment, and possess a strong sense of initiative.


 Physical Requirements:



  • Can walk a minimum of one-half mile. 

  • Push and move weights up to 10 lbs. on a consistent basis and 25 lbs. on an occasional basis.

  • Move weights up to 25 lbs. on a consistent basis and 50 lbs. on an occasional basis.
